Guzheng Ensemble

The SGS Guzheng Ensemble nurtures a deep appreciation for the traditional Chinese instrument in its students. Within the ensemble, students are encouraged to demonstrate perseverance and diligence, working together to refine their coordination, focus, and musicality as a team.
Key programmes
Members of the ensemble have numerous opportunities to perform at school events, including Lunar New Year celebrations, Garden Fiesta, National Day celebrations, Semestral Awards Day, and Celebration Friday for Brunei exchange students. They also showcase their talents at external events such as the President’s Challenge Charity Gala Dinner, the Serangoon National Day Dinner, The French School, and NEX shopping mall.
Students also participate in combined schools concerts, providing valuable opportunities to connect with like-minded peers who share a passion for traditional Chinese music while further developing their performance skills. These experiences help build confidence on stage and enhance their musical abilities.
In 2024, the ensemble took part in a cultural exchange with students from Ocean Reef Senior High School (ORSHS) in Australia. While SGS students presented a traditional Guzheng performance, the ORSHS students showcased rock music, enriching the cultural exchange by exposing both groups to diverse musical traditions and artistic expressions.
The ensemble is also committed to serving the community through its Values-in-Action (VIA) programme. Members visited Ling Kwang Home for Senior Citizens, where they performed for residents, served meals, and engaged them through Bingo games. They also conducted an outreach programme at Brighton Connection, an after-school student care centre supporting students from lower-income families, organising activities such as hands-on Guzheng experiences and interactive games. In addition, the ensemble visited PCF Sparkle Care Active Ageing (Care), where they performed for elderly residents and sang familiar songs together, bringing joy and companionship to the community.
Achievements
The ensemble has consistently achieved outstanding results at the biennial Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation. From 2013 to 2025, it attained the Certificate of Distinction at every presentation, reflecting the members' dedication, teamwork, and commitment to excellence.
